The decision to drop the bomb was a hard decision to make for truman, but the public was pushing for revenge on the japanese attack on pearl harbor. He could either risk the lives of millions of american soldiers, use tons of supplies, and take much longer, or he could use two bombs that had the same power as 20,000 tons of TNT each and skip the american casualties. Some of the other incentives to use the bombs were ending the war as early as possible with the lowest possible cost, to “justify the cost of the Manhattan project”, to “impress the soviet” union, and the “response to pearl harbor”.
